Matte Painting project. I really bombed it to be honest, I was supposed to aim for realism but it's the hardest thing for me.

I think that's a decent wake-up call then. I've gotta focus on realistic backgrounds, human anatomy, and city scapes. (possibly ships and mechanical objects as well)

*We had to alter a scene from a movie, I got Avatar out the bag :P Giant mushroom instead of a tree, changed some other things too.

I think the key to the realism that you're after is probably in the use/perfection of lighting and shadows. Of course, that said, I am no expert artist, myself... nor am I at your skill level. But when it comes down to what I've seen, it seems to me that the best realism (in my opinion) came from drawings and works that had the most naturally portrayed lighting in them. This includes works with non-realistic subjects like cartoon characters, so it seems like a very powerful concept to me.

Just a thought, really. Not to be taken as overall criticism of your work in general, here. (Again, not really sure I'm in the place for that yet :XD:) This pic, of course, is beautifully done.
